    2010 Terminology meeting in Nijmegen

    Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:22 | Written by Administrator
Nijmegen, sensible of the known universe
The creme de la creme of the Dutch higher education terminology world gather in Nijmegen to ponder the weighty issue of approved European higher education terms

Terminologiebijeenkomst Nederlandse & Vlaamse Talencentra 2010

Sheer self indulgence? No way - just working on a carbohydrate rush to help us to stay alert and focused throughout this intellectually demanding day

Just another facet of the period charm of our conference venue

Michelle poses for the birdie in a fashionable feathery little number reminiscent of her Native American ancestry

Michelle and Bert ready and waiting for the terminology crowd

We sign on the dotted line and collect our conference packs

Babette is happy with her bedtime reading

Dave and Nigel in full flow

The gentle buzz of conversation rises to a dull roar

    Coffee and cakes magically disappear

Mirjam, Babette and Linda solve the world's problems

The catering ladies did us proud

    We mingle and network

Julia and Dave patiently listen to Nigel's witterings

Nobody seems to want to move into the conference room ... the coffee and cakes are just too good

Nico carefully listens to a colleagues weighty arguments ... Linda struggles with a mid-morning dip

    Bert opens the proceedings

Liesbet welcomes everyone to the meeting

    Michelle kicks off the meeting

    Nico takes notes

    Dave enjoys a quick scribble

Julia, Stephen and Nigel enjoy a quick giggle

    Bert and Babette talk shop

Nicolette had been laid low by gastric flu, but we showed her PowerPoint presentation anyway

Julia gives us an introduction to the Groningen database

Time for tea, and a long walk to the computer room.

Bert Keurentjes, the translation coordinator at Radboud in'to Languages summarised this part of the programme at his company website:

"Het inhoudelijke deel van het programma werd door Nigel Hillen (Taalcentrum-VU) afgesloten met een workshop over de Higher Education Term Wiki, een online platform voor overleg en discussie over de vertaling van onderwijsterminologie. Dit veelbelovende project viel bij de aanwezigen erg in de smaak, getuige het enthousiasme waarmee zij deelnamen aan de workshop en het grote aantal aanmeldingen voor de Wiki in de dagen na de bijeenkomst." The good news is that our 100th wiki member has just signed up!

Everybody logs on to the wiki while Nigel natters on about how to create new terms and add comments

Nigel looks stern as he concentrates on the pocket billiards

It's not as hard as it looks

Everybody entered several new records ... and Nigel issued invitations for them to join the wiki ... a win-win situation

Shortly after all this hard work we wandered off to the bar for lashings of social lubricant

    The End
